•Next, you need to decide on the exact type of flowers that you want to have, in a flower garden. You might go for perennials only or just annuals or a mixture of the two. Here, your personal preferences will also come into play, as to whether you like the ones that are colorful to look at or those that give off heavenly fragrance.
•Prepare a rough drawing of the flower garden, as you intend it to be. Make sure to incorporate any large structures, trees or other items in it, which you want to be a part of the garden. You don't need to be very accurate. The drawing is intended to serve as a rough draft of the flower garden, helping you envision the overall look.
•Now, you have to pinpoint the exact location of individual flower seeds. In this context, you need to select the best spot for each flower, depending on its needs and requirements. As a general rule, tall flowers provide a backdrop for smaller flowers and exotic flowers go well with simple ones. Make sure not to plant tall or spreading flowers too close to small ones.
•Have a look at the soil that is present in your garden, in order to analyze how rich it is. In case you feel that the soil is poor in terms of nutrients, you will have to use the right amount of fertilizers to make it ready for planting the flower seeds. If the area is already planted, you will need to remove grass, weeds or unwanted flowers, using spade, hoe or tiller.
•By now, you have decided the site of your garden as well as location of individual flowers and also prepared the soil. This is the time to purchase flower seeds from the local nursery. The amount of seeds that you buy will depend upon the amount of different flower plants you want and the size of your garden.
•Keeping in mind the directions given on the seed packet, you will now plant the flower seeds. Usually, annuals are sown in the spring season, while perennials can be planted in the winter (for spring germination). As for the depth at which the seeds should be planted, the best time to fertilize them as well as watering them, refer to the seed packet.
•You will have to water and feed your flower garden throughout the season. Make sure to weed the garden as well, to make sure that they have no competition for water and nutrients. Once the flowers have been established, you will have to deadhead the spent blossoms, to stimulate new growth. Also remember to remove overgrowth and avoid crowding.

Travel With Yellow Flowers Mark The Way

Let's climb Arabia Mountain today!

We went on a climb/walk up Arabia Mountain this past weekend. There were stone cairns to mark the way, but the yellow daisies which bloom at the mountain were charmingly lining the pathway up the mountain. These little flowers also bloom at Stone Mountain, and they are even called Stone Mountain Yellow Daisies or Confederate Daisies, but that is according to the dictionary, I have only ever heard them called Yellow Daisies. This is the astonishing thing: they only grow within a 60 mile radius of Stone Mountain. I wonder if that figure is correct today and perhaps that radius might now be smaller.

The wonderful thing is that these flowers are at their peak at the first of September. So we were happily surprised by the abundance of these lovely flowers on our walk .  They may not have been at their best, but oh, it was a pleasure to see them. Arabia Mountain has just in the past few years been completely transformed by new walking and bike trails around the mountain. There is another mountain close by, Panola Mountain, and both of these were heavily quarried for the lovely granite. Stone Mountain is just north of these mountains, about seven or eight miles away. Arabia Mountain is part of what is a National Heritage Area and will eventually link up to the thousands of acres at the Monastery.   (I have written an earlier post about the Monastery here in Rockdale County.)

The elevation of Arabia Mountain is 948 feet above sea level.  Not as high as  Stone Mountain (which is 1,686 feet) but enough to get you away from the madding crowd. We only saw a few people and other than that, we were completely alone.   Lovely.

These last few photos are of the boardwalk that skirts around the base of the mountain and then the trail continues across the road and goes on for miles and miles.   The yellow daisies were so beautiful.  I hope someday that yellow flowers will mark your way.

Plant Flowers in Autumn

In most countries, spring and early summer are the normal flowering times for the majority of plants and for good reason too. How else would they be able to fit the time in to produce their fruiting bodies and seeds in time for autumn? Why autumn? Well, many of the seeds from cooler, temperate regions require a dormancy period before germination can occur. This dormancy period is usually broken by a period of cold weather, followed by warmer, wetter weather ensuring that germination occurs at the most suitable time. This enables the juvenile plants to make use of the longer warmer days for effective photosynthesis and gives them an entire year to grow, store energy as carbohydrates, and prepare for the following onset of winter.

Unfortunately this natural cycle of growth, flowering and seed production means that - for the ornamental gardener - gardens look a little worse for wear once the summer comes to an end, but with a little investigation there are plants from warmer climates that are ‘tricked’ into flowering at the wrong time of the year. This is because plants from warmer regions need certain triggers in order to initiate flowering. This can be day length, average day temperatures, average night temperatures, seasonal rainfall, light intensity, the list goes on.

 

In cooler regions many of these triggers occur much later on in the year which is why there warmer climate plants flower later in cooler climates. Unfortunately they tend not to be able to produce fruiting bodies or viable seed before the colder temperatures of winter arrive. This can make it more difficult for propagation but for most gardeners this isn’t a factor when they come to choose their late summer/autumn flowering plants.

The Wild Mini-Sunflowers

Considering there is/was a drought around these parts, I’ve recently observed wild over-grown bushes of mini-sunflowers just about everywhere. This can only indicate> the times we are living in aren’t as hopeless as they sometimes seem to be. Or that a few of Rick Perry’s prayers were answered? I’m sure flowers were in his prayers.

Needless to say wild-sunflowers are growing along sides of major roads, in big empty fields and lining a bike path I’m fond of taking. It is a nice sight, considering the wild-flowers that should have been (months prior) never bloomed to fruition. Here they are, now sprouting up after that last and brief rain.

Large sun flowers tend to grow vertically, but this wild mini-variety grows horizontally and all over the place. It is more like a hunched over and tangled web. Speckled with tiny yellow flowers weaved amongst the stems, it looks like a bush of weeds from a distance.. As soon as I spotted the bush below I knew that it could use some help by being pruned back. As well, it was slightly obstructing a walk-way. I thought some fall-trimming was in order.

One large stem yielded a nice wild arrangement. I decided to keep some of the dried pods (on the stem) in the medley and arranged the wild blooms in a vintage vase I dug up. I think the pods add a nice dimension and create a good balance in the arrangement between what is new and what is old. Balance is always the motive.

Master Gardeners: Specimen trees bring beauty and interest to garden

SPECIMEN TREES are incorporated in a garden because of their beautiful flowers, architectural shapes, ornamental bark, prolific perfume or outstanding foliage. Specimen trees also may be planted to commemorate important occasions — the birth of a child, a marriage, even a death. They are given pride of place, a special spot where the tree's attributes will be fully appreciated. The specimen tree should grab one's attention.

At the entrance to my property in Greece, I planted a species of Cassia tree that had been given to me by a friend. It was a living house-warming gift. My friend had dug out a shoot from her own tree, potted it and cared for it for several years, until it became a viable young tree. 

It is well-suited to the Mediterranean climate, although it does appreciate additional water during the summer, even after it is established. Its spectacular yellow blossoms and medium size make it an excellent specimen tree. Because I was able to plant it in an open space along the footpath leading to my house, it enjoys full sun and can be easily seen and appreciated. When I planted it, I enriched the soil with some humus I had taken from the base of my carob tree.

In Greece, the rich humus that develops at the base of carob trees is commonly used to amend garden soil. Carob trees grow well in Mediterranean climates, without requiring any additional water. They also can be considered specimen
trees, with their interesting carob pods. If properly pruned, they will provide comfortable year-round shade. On my property, the single carob tree provides a screen between my property and my neighbor's. Carob trees grow large and require a large garden space. Carob pods are edible — they taste similar to chocolate — and can be ground up and used as a chocolate substitute.


In my garden in Marin, we had a small, flowering cherry tree that provided a focal point in spring with its delicate blossoms. Sadly, after a hard winter, it died. Thinking about replacing it, I have considered planting a persimmon tree. As specimen trees, persimmons can be considered purely ornamental: in the fall they lose their leaves and the fruit remains hanging on the bare branches, looking like orange Christmas-tree ornaments.


However, if one consumes those orange globes, persimmons could accurately be considered fruit trees. I wait until persimmons are fully ripe, then scoop out the sweet pudding-like pulp and add it to my morning fruit juice drink. Alternatively, the pulp can be added to steamed puddings or breads.
In spring, the tree's foliage emerges pale green. In summer, the leaves become thick and leathery, providing excellent shade. Depending on where you plant a persimmon tree in the garden, it could be used to provide architectural interest, fruit, shade or all three.


It may also provide a symbolic connection. While young, persimmons are bitter and inedible, but as they age, they become sweet and beneficial to mankind. In the famous painting by the 13th-century Chinese painter Mu Qi, "Six Persimmons," persimmons exemplify the progression from youth to age, as a symbol of the progression from bitterness to sweetness. As we age, we overcome rigidity and prejudice and attain compassion and sweetness.


My older daughter recently celebrated, somewhat reluctantly, her 30th birthday. She is in shock at being no longer in her 20s. My husband and I are in shock at having a 30-year-old daughter. How old does that make us?

Chrysanthemum show returns to Stilesboro

Fall typically personifies a season of change where all matter of foliage prepares for the coming winter.
But for one last time, before the frost begins to settle, flowers are in bloom for the 99th annual Stilesboro Chrysanthemum Show.
This is the best time of year for the flower and members of the Stilesboro Improvement Club said they take advantage by putting them on display for the community to enjoy.
Several months of planning and dedication are invested by the club’s members to ensure that each show is unique and special.
From the pruning and watering to the design and set up, the chrysanthemum show is a labor of love for those who spend much of the year planning and preparing for it, said Stilesboro Improvement Club member Susiann Brock.
“Somehow it all comes together,” Brock said.

Brock said each year the group works to create a show that centers around a theme that best showcases the chrysanthemums.
All of the flowers in the show are grown by club members who take pride in their green thumb, Brock said.
“We get to work together with the satisfaction of seeing the room and how beautiful it looks,” Brock said.

From a “Gone with the Wind” theme to a show titled “At the Movies,” the Stilesboro Chrysanthemum Show, which is the oldest in Georgia, brings more than the garden variety flower show.
This year’s theme is Horse and Buggy Days and the room will include decorations from a one-room school house and a vintage buggy sans horse.
“That is the unique thing about us” said Stilesboro Improvement Club member Ann Mascia. “Decorating the whole building is really what sets us apart.



Brock, who has been gardening since she was 7 years old, said there is some competition to create the most dazzling display for the show.
The flowers are judged and Brock said bragging rights go to the winner.
The show is held every year at the Stilesboro Academy and in addition to the flowers on display, food will be available for purchase in the Tea Room.


Dishes include Brunswick stew, chicken salad, homemade cakes and beverages.
Admission to the event, which will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., is $2 per person.
“All the money we do raise goes toward the restoration of the building,” Mascia said.

1-800-Flowers.com (FLWS) operates as a retailer of gifts and flowers in the United States. FLWS offers floral arrangements, gift baskets, gourmet foods and a variety of other gifts for any occasion.
Despite its name, the company is not limited to selling its products through online sources. 1-800-Flowers.com also manages and franchises a chain of brick-and-mortar retail stores. FLWS is a small-cap stock, with a market capitalization of only $181 million.


Marc Gerstein, editor of Forbes Low-Priced Stock Report, recently added FLWS to his portfolio of 40 low-priced stocks alongside other notable brand names such as Sirius XM Radio (SIRI).


However, unlike Sirius–the home of Howard Stern’s radio show–which has much of its own market cornered, 1-800-Flowers.com faces stiff competition.The key, explains Gerstein, is that while FLWS must contend with online retail giants like Amazon.com (AMZN), “flowers and gifts, including

chocolates, cookies, etc. is FLWS’ specialty and although Amazon does it, FLWS does it better, and has a pretty strong and recognizable brand image in its own right.” Amazon works across a broad range of retail markets, whereas 1-800-Flowers understands its niche and has worked to further expand and define its place within it.

“The days when the company was all flowers are long gone. The 1-800-Flowers.com online store also accommodates 1-800baskets.com, Cheryl’s, Fannie May Fine Chocolates and The Popcorn Factory, all of which are visible from each of the Web sites,” says Gerstein. Each of these brands fit the mold of small gifts that are appropriate for a variety of occasions, and recipients. In addition to these brands, FLWS also has strategic partnerships with several other companies, including Yankee Candles. These collaborative efforts “further enhance the opportunities FLWS has to make contact with customers.”

The most notable marketing efforts FLWS has made beyond its collaborations are within the online social networking world. Over the next decade Marc Gerstein believes that online retailing, which debuted in the late 1990s to early 2000s, will become further entrenched as “customers become more habituated to the variety of ways to transact business.” Expanded social-network and mobile device marketing, facebook and twitter advertising, as well as mobile app development should help 1-800-Flowers take advantage of this entrenchment.

MF Global and Chris Flowers Get More Change

When financial institutions are ailing, J. Christopher Flowers can be counted on to be close by.
The private-equity investor made a name for himself buying distressed banks during the Japanese financial crisis in the 1990s. And he emerged at the epicenter of 2008’s financial meltdown, making plays for icons such as Bear Stearns Cos. and American International Group Inc.


Now his firm, J.C. Flowers & Co., is in talks with MF Global Holdings Inc., as the brokerage struggles with multiple credit downgrades in the wake of souring bets it made on European sovereign debt.
With MF Global, the 54-year-old Mr. Flowers isn’t swooping in from afar. MF Global and J.C. Flowers have longstanding ties, and any deal to save the ailing MF Global could help protect J.C. Flowers’s 6% stake preferred stake in the brokerage.

J.C. Flowers gained the position in 2008 when it agreed to help MF Global refinance debt, three months after the firm suffered a $141 million charge from unauthorized wheat trading.
J.C. Flowers backed former New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine when he took the top job at MF Global last year. Mr. Corzine, who also is an operating partner at J.C. Flowers, was an executive at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., as was Mr. Flowers. Requests for comment to J.C. Flowers on Sunday were not returned.


Mr. Flowers became a partner at Goldman in 1988 at age 30, eventually heading its bank-mergers business. He left Goldman in 1998 after helping engineer the firm’s initial public offering.In the ensuing years he worked as vice-chairman of Enstar Group Inc., a Montgomery, Ala.-based trader of over-the-counter and bulletin-boards stocks, and as a sort of freelance investment banker from his office in Manhattan. He raised his first Flowers fund in 2001 to invest in financial services companies, touting the sector’s “enormous amount of opportunity.


Mr. Flowers became particularly ubiquitous in the financial meltdown of 2007 and 2008, when several of the nation’s biggest financial institutions were on the rails. In mid 2008, Mr. Flowers told investors in his Fund II, “This is the Super Bowl of investment. It’s no time to be sitting in the bleachers.”
That year, as he furiously invested much of the $7-billion fund in financial institutions, the former investment banker also played a role advising Bank of America Corp. in its 2008 acquisition of Merrill Lynch & Co.


In September 2008 Mr. Flowers personally acquired northern Missouri’s First National Bank of Cainesville and renamed it Flowers National Bank. Though a small operation in an agricultural region, the acquisition gave Mr. Flowers a platform from which to acquire failed banks or their deposits.
Despite his enthusiasm in 2008, Mr. Flowers’ firm, whose investors include the government of Singapore and Columbia University, was hammered by the turmoil. That fall the fund was marked down about 30%, or $2 billion. Last year, it was marked down to half of its original value.
